I looked at a hive the other day – not one of mine by the way. Marked queen present, some drone brood in the comb and not thriving. Worse was some 'molten' looking larvae as EFB presents itself.

Time to get he bee inspector in perhaps?

Looking again a few minutes later it was apparent that it was neglected drone brood as pointed out by a NDB beekeeper. Big relief – I was already deciding how to sterilise my veil and footwear!

The queen had started to lay drones in worker cells and the bees decided to ignore some of the brood around the drones as there was no room for them. A second queen was seen in the hive – a large unmarked one (supercedure) so the reason for the poorly performing colony was not EFB as I feared but a poor queen that was being replaced.

Scary! Well Im glad it turned out to be the lesser of two evils!!

There is a lot of AFB up my way at the moment! Very scary! Smelly too, I guess thats a tip for anyone thinking they might have foul brood: it smells like rotten fish I think? Smells bad anyway, if found you must report it to DEFRA.
