Hi, I just discovered a bee hive in stump out in our woods where we feed the deers, we just can't figure out what kind of bee's they

are? Our only concern is that they are not killer bee's? They do not seem to be agressive towards us just by walking out there and

getting within 8-10 feet of them. They are the same size as honey bee's but are black with a yellow thorax, some even seem to have

a stripe of yellow.

The other lure seems to be a salt block that sits by the stump, they really seem to love that!

Whatever information someone can give me would be appreciated!

Lisa

Hello,

I am just a beginner myself but it sounds as though they are not Africanized [or killer] bees. Have you seen this web page?

http://www.ehow.co.uk/info_804…..-live.html

We do not have this kind of bee here in the Britain. You may be describing wasps [do you call them yellow jackets?] or hornets. This is a UK site for beekeepers which shows some images of different insects that are confused with bees :- http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do….._swarm.php.

Watch out for wasps as they can use their sting many times, bees can only use their sting once. Any rate I should give them a wide berth as you never know if something or someone else has upset them previously.

All good wishesBig Smile

Oh! If the salt block contains molasses they are probably after that?

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum.

Well you are from the US so it probably isnt a european honeybee.

I would imagine its some kind of wood wasp. Have you checked out an insect book to see if you can see them. Maybe a potter wasp or a hornet of some kind.

What size are they? big? If they are my money would be on hornets!

Either way I would leave them alone, and keep pets away from it too. Dude
