Hi all,

I've just inspected my hives after a 3 week gap. The reason for the long delay was because my only hive swarmed. the swarm was captured 10feet from my hive and rehoused into my spare hive close by. That was 3 weeks ago, today there are no eggs, larva or brood of any kind …..in either hive.

Would it be adequate to beg some brood from another beekeeper or do I have to buy a new queen

Hello Squire welcome to the forum,

So you captured the swarm, but there are now no queens in either hive? Thats pretty bad luck if thats the case. Remember it can take 23+ days for the new queen to start laying.

However you should still have the old queen in the old hive. This is not always the case but if the queen leaves I would have thought the remaining workers would start to superseed!! But if there is no eggs, brood, larva, queen cells or anything then its most liekly that hive is queenless. Id try and find a new queen locally.

What you could do is wait another few days see if the new hive starts producing brood, then punt some over to the old hive, see if the bees will create some queens from it.

Are you a member of your local beekeepers association? If so give them a call and ask for help. Someone should hopefully have a look in your hives for the queens and hopefully help you source some new ones if needs be.

Hope that helps
