Whilst searching for European Foul Brood (EFB) which was discovered in over sixty hives in the Perthshire and Angus area (forty of which have been destroyed), the American strain has also been found in Perthshire apiaries and hives. American Foul Brood (AFB) has been found in atleast four hives and three apiaries.

EFB infected colonies can fortunately be treated and normally saved, those with AFB however must be destroyed by burning the infected hive. The disease itself is caused by a bacterium that infiltrates the bee larvae, consuming their food supply starving the larvae to death. It can be recognised by the strong rotten fish smell (not always present) created in infected hives and the discolouration of cells (see pic), sunken/perforated cappings with brownish meltings inside. The advice of experts is to check your hives regularly and if any signs are present to contact your local beekeeping association to seek advice and to inform the government body DEFRA. EFB was discovered in Perthshire and Angus last month.

Gavin Ramsay from the Scottish Beekeepers Association said: “It’s the worst problem in beekeeping in Scotland for very many years.

“It’s going to be very disruptive to beekeeping probably for a few years.

“It’s a notifiable disease, so that means if you have a suspicion that you have it in your bees you have to tell the authorities and the bee inspectors will come and have a look and test it.

“It’s a new problem, it’s something that we’re not used to dealing with here, so it means people are going to have to learn how to identify it in the early stages so it can be treated, and also how to change our beekeeping to minimise the likelihood it’s going to appear.”

Using a manipulation cloth to keep your bees calm

A great aid when carrying out hive manipulation is a manipulation cloth. Its a very simple design with a rectangular metal frame and two pieces of cloth attached to each long side of the metal frame.

As I took the pictures you can see I was amazed at what a great bee calming tool this is, especially useful for beekeepers in more built up areas. Work through the gap in the manipulation cloth and when finished in that area simply slide the cloth to a new bit or if you require to walk away from the hive for something fold the longer flap over the gap.

What this does is stops the bees from flying straight up from the hive, except through the gap in the manipulation cloth, covering the gap or moving it to a new area then stops them flying up through it. This means there are less angry bees flying above the hive and around you.

The one featured in the photos is from Thorne but if you look at how its designed it really is very simple and even someone with poor DIY/Sewing skills could make it themselves.

Native black British bee could be key to population survival

The Co-operative Group which launched a 10 point programme to help save the honey be called ‘Plan Bee’ has announced funding for Bee Improvement and Bee Breeders (BIBBA) to find and map the locations of native black honey bees and their hybrids.

The native black British bee has evolved to cope with the seasons here and developed a thick black hair covering its body. There is talk that the decline of bees in Britain is partly due to beekeepers using foreign queens producing bees that are unsuited to our climate. This has happened because the native black bees doesnt produce as much honey as its foreign counterparts but if you take the honey production over the lifespan of the hives the native black bee should win because CCD is not as common.

Our advice is dont buy foreign queens and bees, seek out native, black honey bees and queens to populate your hives. Its our native bee, we should be proud of it and try to preserve it. Greed will be the death of us all!!

Broadcasting Masts Causing Colony Collapse Disorder?

Ive just read a very interesting article written by Marion Lang in the Scottish Beekeeper magazine. She explains that the multitude of masts close by her apiary in Angus seems to be affecting hives and causing CCD.

In the article she explains the masts and the broadcasting radiation produced and states that in 2008 Mr Orjan Hallberg and Dr Olle Johanasson produced a paper showing that there is a marked increase with immunity problems in humans when exposed to electrical currents at 100MHz. In the West we broadcast between 87-107 MHz band.

Marion explains that the broadcasting radiation affects her when she lies down and that it affects people across the globe.

Surely if we are affected by these electromagnetic radations then it could also be affecting the bees? More research must be done to discover if these masts are having a detrimental effect on bee health and ours too!

Has anybody else got any information on this, perhaps you think masts are affecting your hives? Please let us know here!

Give your bees a drink – Beekeeping tip

A good tip for beekeepers is to keep an accessible water source for the hive to use. Rather than an open water source like a bird bath or similar, bees prefer to suck the water from a damp area.

The absolute perfect solution would be a small sandpit (even a bowl or flowerpot of sand) near the hive and kept moist. However if you dont have any sand the bees will settle for other things! Have you got some seed trays with compost?

As you can see from the picture they will drink from compost in a seed tray quite happily.

So by hardening of your seedlings outside, keeping them moist your giving the bees a perfect source of water. However try and get a few cups of sand to make a more permanent watering hole.

Bumble Bee Explosion

Whats with the bumble bee explosion over the past month? Their numbers seem to have boomed this month; last week I thought one of the trees in my garden might actually take flight it had so many bumble bee wings beating on it! The buzzing was so loud you could hear it 10 metres away.

The numbers are incredible and give me hope, as the poor bumbler hasnt seemed to be doing terrificaly well in recent years, perhaps its the media attention of the plight of the bumble bee and the upsurge in purchasing of bumble bee nest boxes. Maybe the weather conditions have just been ideal for them this year; no flash flooding and windy conditions like last year!

At a recent trip to my allotment I discovered a bunch of poppies absolutely teaming with bumble bees, there was about five bees on each flower head (not many honey bees though :( ) and I stopped to have a quick look. I spotted atleast two different varieties:

White Tailed Bumble Bee – Bombus Lucorum
Garden Bumble Bee – Bombus Hortorum
Possible even a Buff Tailed Bumble Bee – Bombus Terrestris although Im not sure.

Is it a good idea to harvest all the honey?

A recent conversation with my Mum has sparked this post and I think it raises and interesting point regarding the health of bees.

Obviously one of the benefits to keeping bees is the crop of honey provided but lets not forget why the bees make the honey in the first place….its certainly not for us to put in our tea? No, it is of course to help them survive the harsh winter months. But we can supplement their food/diet with sugar syrup and fondant I hear you cry! This I imagine is especially prevelant in more commercial apiaries but perhaps its a common practise with beginners through to experts. If so, should it be?

So we come to the crux of the issue. Is harvesting all the honey and the supplement of bees food detrimental to hive health; their immune systems in particular? The beneficial effects of honey have been well documented and we know it is a natural antiseptic. Surely honey as a complex solution that has evolved alongside the bee over tens of millions of years, cant be replaced with a simple sugar solution without having a detrimental effect on the bees.

Perhaps the lack of their natural food source is effecting their ability to combat disease and parasites? Could aggressive and greedy beekeeping techniques be contributing to the demise of the honey bee?

Where are all the bees?

I have to say Im very worried. Never in all my life have I seen such a shortage of bees. So far this year I have only seen 2 honey bees!!

That was only a few weeks ago. Years ago they would be out in force in early spring, not this year though.

Admittedly I work indoors so may not have the chance to see a lot of bees buzzing around. Yesterday however, my partner and I enjoyed a relaxing stroll around a small loch in Fife. The loch is a nature reserve with a lot of breeding birds. Skirting the path around the loch for practically the whole circumference is Gorse, Brambles and a variety of trees all of which are blooming. The air was thick with their pollen yet no bees! Not one. Dragonflies, damselflies, hoverflies and of course mdigy-like flies a plenty but no bees.

I stay in Perth and Kinross, I have visited a few areas of Fife recently and have seen 2 honey bees!! Has anyone got a similar story where they are or do you have plenty of bees?

A Beekeepers Year

Well the calendar of a beekeeper goes as follows:

JANUARY

No normally an active time for bees. After storms or high winds, chack that hive roofs are still in place and rain proof. If the ground is covered by snow shade hive entrances so the brightness does not tempt bees into the cold air. Do not clear deep snow from hives. It is air-permeable and a good insulator, the bees should come to know harm. Check each hives food supply by hefting it, lifting one side, feeling how heavy it seems. Colonies in dire need will often be found pressed up against the crown board. Feed candy or fondant, in direct contact with the cluster if required, using an empty super to give the space. How are your anti-varroa dispositions?
Plan the coming seasons work. Order any equipment early from suppliers.

FEBRUARY

Longer days start many colonies into brood rearing, even early in the month, depending on location and conditions. Around the middle of the month check food stores again. Should the weather remain cold feed again if needed. In a warmer spell, when bee flights are possible, a contact feeder of warm syrup could be given.
Varroa inserts can be used to check the mite population towards the end of the month. They should be left in for two weeks and the daily mite fall calculated. Send the debris samples to Scottish Agricultiral Science Agency (SASA) for examination.

MARCH

Mild spells are more common now. Early this month the first opportunity for a cleansing flight after Winter confinement will occur. Some irratation may be cause to neighbours.
Bees become quite active, taking advantage of early flowers: aconite; snowdrop; crocus; butterbur and so on, to collect pollen and nectar. Look out for yellow pollen loads on honecoming bees’ hind legs. Again check stores, particularly after extended warm spells. Feed syrup and/or pollen substitute as required.
A superficial examination of the brood chamber could be done on a fine mild day. Brood combs should not normally be exposed, except perhaps one and that only to verify the presence of brood.
The blooming of the Flowering Currant bush may happen towards the end of this month. It is widely regarded as a signthat stocks can be safely examined, all other conditions being favourable.

APRIL

A busy month for bees and beekeepers. Willow and some ornametal Cherrys provide the first sizeable flow of pollen and nectar. Brood rearing increases, bees are able to take regular flights. Give hives a full examination during a fine day about the middle of the month. Spring clean the hives.
Look out for signs of Winter diseases like acarine and nosema; crawling bees and dysentry. Do the first treatment for Varroa, before putting on any supers. Follow treatment instructions to the letter.
See how well the queen is laying. Make certain the brood is healthy, it should be sparkling pearlescent white in colour and sealed brood uniform and fresh, in oval patches with few gaps. At this time of year little of it should be drone brood, particularly in worker cells. If there are doubts about brood health get an experienced beekeeper from a local association to take a look. Brood disease such as AFB and EFB are very dangerous.
In colder areas, cooler seasons and special conditions needing early colony strength, feeding syrup and pollen substitute can bring development forward if need be. Three weeks are required for new workers to become available.
Mark queens this month while the colony is small. Clip her wings as a method of swarm control, if desired. Unit disease free colonies with normal stocks.

MAY

The flowers of May bring an increase in brood rearing. Queens should not be left short of brood-rearing space. In a congested brood area room can be made by rearranging combs to bring good, empty, drawn comb into the brood rearing area.
In some distracts, supers, with queen excluder under, can be need in the first quarter of the month. Keep your eye on the flowering. Strong stocks can gather a surplus from OSR – this needs special treatment, remove as soon as possible – and sycamore.
Now is the time to activate your swarm control dispositions. The artificial swarm as a means of varroa management can now be applied to advantage.

JUNE

The early part of June marks the transition between the Spring flowers and the blooming of the Summer flowers. Nectar may be scarce in some places and seasons. This is the ‘June Gap’ . Feeding amy be necessary, especially if you have removed the Spring honey. Should an extended dry period occur, and they do occasionally, make sure a shallow dish of water is available to the bees. They need it to mobilise their honey stores and to raise brood.
In most districts bees will swarm sometimes this month if left to their own devices, earlier to the Southwest and later to the Northeast. All colonies require regular, nine day examination. Queen rearing should be undertaken at this time during a nectar flow. The queens raised this month will get a chance to mate well in warm July weather. Now begin to prepare your heather harvest colonies. Those need vigorous young queens and abundant foragers.
Supers should be ready for the main flow from white clover towards the later part of this month.

JULY

The swarming impulse will gradually die away towards the middle of the month. Should a swarm occur later despite your best efforts, it will need luck or assistance to establish itself adequately for Winter.
By the third week of July the main floral honey flow from lime, bramble and willow herb, will normally be drawing to a close. Colonies avid for stores will pounce on any bits of honeycomb from manipulations, Beware, robbing can be provoked. Confining manipulations to late afternoon or evening may help avoid this. During the last week remove completed supers. Start extraction and preparation of floral honey. This work can continue through the next two months.
Once the supers are removed examine colonies and if necessary, treat for Varroa. This is also a good time to requeen stocks. Colonies prepared for going to the heather should be readied for the move during the last week of this month.

AUGUST

During the first week of August shift your prepared colonies to the moors. Heather can make heavy demands on even the strongest stocks if there is prolonged poor weather at your site. Watch their food supplies.
Colonies not moved to the moors can receive atention to get them ready for Winter. They are now raising their Winter bees. Drones start to be herded to the margins of the brood area and expelled from the hive.
Treatment for Varroa can be very urgent at this time.The total quantity of brood available to Varroamites is diminishing, but mites are not. At this critical moment a brood of badly infested colonies can be swamped by hungry young mites. Rapid lethal damage ensues. Even in lightly infested colonies, the destruction of mites exposed now at their most vulnerable on adult bees, will diminish the Winter load of parasites and maximise the mites problem come next Spring.

SEPTEMBER

Colonies from the heather moors should all be returned home by the middle of the month, examined and treated for Varroa if this has not already been done.
Be alert for any influx of bees from Varroa collapsed colonies, carrying mites into your healthy stocks. These could undo all your hard work if the go unoticed and untreated.
Every colony should be checked for health. Conditions such as Nosema, Acarine and so on, which can flourish in Winter confinement, need your attention. As these require the use of amicroscope for diagnosis, if the field symptoms are discovered, you mite need to enlist the help of your local association.
Wet, extracted combs can be given to the colonies to clean up. All necessary fedding, uniting of stocks and nucleai and general Winter preparations should be over by the end of the month; remaining supers and queen exluder removed from the colonies; Varroa floors, if fitted should be checked. The stock i.e. frames, bees, brood chamber and ancillary bits, should wiegh in about 25kg, feel quite heavy!

OCTOBER

Brood rearing ceases. The bees become less active, starting to gather in their dense Winter cluster on colder days.
Discontinue liquid feeding after the middle of October. Carry out final Winter preparations. Reduce entrance size and fit mouse guards if required. Rope or weight down roofs making hives weather proof.
Store extracting combs securely, treated against waxmoth. Carefully clean, sterilise and dry all extracting equipment. Repair any equipment damaged during the year.

NOVEMBER

Check that hives remain secure against the weather, particularly after storms. In the North and East, Winter can suddenly anounce itself with great violence.

DECEMBER

For bees and beekeepers the quietest month, but check that roofs remain water tight. If sunshine follows snow, shade the hive entrance so bees are not lured out into the cold, where they rapidly chill and die.

Sasha’s Beekeeping Story

Beekeeping is a noble occupation that enriches both physically and mentally and in the same time it is very important part of food production system. Bees are pollinating one third of our food crops. Albert Einstein speculated that “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.” Today modern beekeeping is industrialized and in my opinion shows big signs of stress.

Trucking bees across continent in order to fulfill growing need for crop pollination, parasitic varroa mite which has traveled from far away Java island because of migratory beekeeping and has since ’80 spread trough the whole world, bacterial and viral diseases, economical destruction of beekeepers because of importing of low quality and often contaminated honey (made probably with slave labor) from China, there are many problems today for us beekeepers. But on the other side not everything is so dark. Pure enjoyment of working in the nature which such beings who are considered as sacred beings in many traditions, enjoyment in the smell of a freshly opened beehive, hard earned honey which is truly a food of goods along with other incredible products of a healthy beehive, wax,pollen,royal jelly,propolis and even bee venom, is highly priced. All in all a beehive is a spring of health and youth. At least it was until 2-3 decades when the real problems of over stressing bees with artificial feed (sugar) pesticides against mites,and too intense robbing of bees work has occurred.

This year we have a some weird things happening to bees colonies in USA ,it is called CCD – colony collapse disorder, it means that nobody is knowing what is happening, the bee’s are simply gone from beehives and the hives were found empty. But there is some kind of improvement , the organic beekeeping movement is gaining strength, it is a radical movement which does not allows using any kind of treatment of our bees ,it seeks way back to natural beekeeping, to find again the strength inherent in bees which have survived for so many thousands of years. For me personally, my goal is to achieve independence with my small beekeeping endeavor. I am trying to start small and grow with time and eventually one day maybe make my living from beekeeping only. If I don t achieve that ,I am pretty sure that my love for beekeeping will follow me through my whole life. When you are once hocked to smell and buzz of bees it is hard to forget their magic. To be a beekeeper one must have a clear mind, you have to think about everything,weather,flowering,economic considerations,health of bees,making wooden equipment etc.

Learning basics of beekeeping is not too complicated but to learn finesses you have to learn all your life. As someone once said it is more than a science, beekeeping is really an art. Right now I have only 5 hives left from 15 which is the numbers of hives I have before last winter. This year I plan to split my hives in order to increase the number of hives. I need to reach at least 100 hives in order to make a living from bees. But I think beekeeping is rewarding and in time my work will yield something for me. That is the reason I endure all the problems. I hope I will succeed in beekeeping in the organic, sustainable way.
