could i add to what type of hives , where abouts in the uk are you, as location can affect how you prepare bees for winter

i live in london so we have a longer season than most of the uk, that is due to london micro climate, but that means longer for varroa to biuld up and bigger broods

so in london if you try to run a standard mongrel brownish bee then a national standard brood is to small, the first super just gets arched with pollen as the bees treat it a part of the brood, so more information needed before i can give advice

Basically though over wintering with two brood boxes is fine. Infact it may even be beneficial as cluster is further from the ground and further from the damp of the ground.
